How to start a junk removal company / How to market a junk removal company - info coming soon.

GVRD Waste Management.  The Greater Vancouver Landfill is located at 5400 72nd Street in Delta, just off of River Road.  This is where the junk haulers take your waste and recyclables.  Up to 4 mattresses can be dropped off for free.  Yard waste is about $50 per ton and garbage is $65 per ton. Car batteries, metals, cardboard and paper products are free to drop. There is also a Transfer Station in South Vancouver on Kent Street that has a recycling depot at the entrance.  Turn South on Manitoba from South West Marine Drive and then turn right at Kent.  The North Vancouver dump is located at 30 Riverside Drive, just off the Dollarton Hwy.  There is also a recycling centre across the street at 75 Riverside Dr., North Vancouver.

Metal Recycling. Metals, including appliances, can be dropped at any transfer station or the Vancouver landfill at no charge, however if you have larger amounts of scrap metal (over 1000 lbs), you can actually sell it.  While rates fluctuate, about $55 per ton is standard at places such as Richmond Steel or Amix.   You can't drop freezers or fridges here though due to Freon concerns.  Take your old refrigerator to a recycling depot and drop it (carefully!) free of charge, or call BC Hydro.  The powersmart program will often pay cash for old fridges in working order (no matter how poorly they work).  Copper and aluminum can be sold in much smaller quantities than others metals because they are worth much more - usually at least 50 cents per pound (copper was recently over $2.00 per lb.).  For a listing of scrap metal dealers check out the CMI Vancouver Directory.

Free scrap car removal throughout the lower mainland is available from CMI in Vancouver and Surrey.  Call (604) 725-6499

Disposal of paint and chemicals should be dealt with with extreme caution.  Most landfills do not accept these items, but there are private recycling depots which will accept them free of charge in small amounts (ie. up to 10 cans of paint).  The exception is the North Vancouver Landfill, which accepts up to 12 cans of household paint free.

Drywall is an environmental hazard and should only be disposed of at a proper facility (Instructions on how to dispose of drywall in Greater Vancouver)

When in doubt about what to do about your trash, call the GVRD Recycling Hotline at 604-732-9253.  They'll direct you to the appropriate facility.

And don't forget to call CMI Rubbish Removal at (604) 722-5103 when you can't do it yourself.  CMI specializes in offering junk removal in North Vancouver, but services all areas of the Lower Mainland out as far as Langley at the same low rates.
